Listed below are the Caldecott and Newbery Award recipients who have appeared in Biography for Beginners, both the general series and the All Authors volume. These indexes were created in response to librarians who told us that their school curriculums and sometimes their state standards require that elementary students understand the importance of these awards, as well as information about the authors and illustrators who have won them. The Caldecott and Newbery Indexes begin with a brief description of each award, including the award criteria. The index citations list the author, title, year, and type of award (either Medal or Honor). Thus, a student given an assignment to choose a Newbery or Caldecott winner can both understand the award's importance and read the author's entry for information on the titles that were honored. A printable version of the indexes is available for download in PDF format. To access it, just click on the "Open pdf Version" button above. |
Caldecott Medal and Honor Book IndexThe Caldecott Awards were established by the American Library Association in 1937. Each year since then, one Medal Winner and several Honor Book winners have been selected to receive this prestigious award. According to the ALA, the Caldecott Medal is awarded to "the artist of the most distinguished American Picture Book for Children published in the United States during the preceding year. The award shall go to the artist, who must be a citizen or resident of the United States, whether or not he be the author of the text." The award committee also cites a number of other books they consider worthy of attention as "Honor Books." Listed below are the Caldecott recipients who have appeared in Biography for Beginners, both the regular series and the All Authors volume. The specific issue the individual appeared in appears after his or her name. The listings are arranged alphabetically by author, then chronologically by the date of the award. Each citation includes the title for which the award was given, whether it was a Medal or Honor Book award, and the year the award was received. If the author was not the illustrator of the winning book, the illustrator's name is included. Similarly, if the illustrator was not the author of the text, the author's name is given. Newbery Medal and Honor IndexThe Newbery Awards were established by the American Library Association in 1921. Each year since then, one Medal Winner and several Honor Book winners have been selected to receive this important award. According to the ALA, the Newbery Medal is awarded "for the most distinguished American children's book published the previous year." Its purpose is "To encourage original creative work in the field of books for children. To emphasize to the public that contributions to the literature for children deserve similar recognition to poetry, plays, or novels. To give those librarians, who make it their life work to serve children's reading interests, an opportunity to encourage good writing in this field." The award committee also cites a number of other books they consider worthy of attention as "Honor Books."
